Saffron is a prized botanical made from the stigma of a sterile crocus, the crocus sativa, which blooms in the autumn in areas with wet springs and hot dry summers. It takes nearly 150 flowers to produce a single gram of dried saffron threads. It is used in flavoring foods and is fabulous as a dye. It yields a deep, rich yellow that has given its mark to the robes of Tibetan monks, among others. According to Dr. Vasant Lad it is a wonderful spice for cleansing the blood, detoxing the liver, and tonifying the nerves. A lovely way to take saffron is to use it in spiced warm milk. You can also add a little saffron to your rice during the cooking process.
