Femmebit is a 3-day visual art festival celebrating the work of over 75 diverse, enterprising and forward-thinking female-identifying artists currently based in Los Angeles. It takes place Friday, May 31st to Sunday, June 2nd 2019 at Civic Center Studios, located in the heart of Downtown’s Historic Core.
As part of the 3-day-long festival, Julie Weitz will host a moderated panel discussion “SACRED CLOWNS and FOOLISH RESISTANCE” on Sunday June 2 from 3-4:30pm.
Julie will be in conversation with Kate Anne Durbin, Rachel Mason, Christina Catherine Martinez, and Mitra Saboury, a group of artists and performers who embody clownishness to oppose outdated notions of gender, power, community and identity. As highly aware contrarians, these artists highlight the hypocrisy and absurdity of dominant culture in outrageous and hysterical ways. Utilizing video, immersive installation, stand up comedy, performance and social media, they spread their zaniness through digital technology and reflect back to the world the wild inconsistencies of fixed perception
